HLI President: Obama Administration Complicit in Increasing Abortions in Africa IPPF stated goal of increasing abortion services by 82% “would be impossible without U.S. government funding" FRONT ROYAL, Virgina – Human Life International President Father Shenan J. Boquet is calling on the Obama Administration to immediately cease funding of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which supplies grants to International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) following a news report that IPPF planned an 82 percent increase in abortion services in Africa between 2010 and 2015. “The Obama Administration, which gave almost 100 million dollars to UNFPA in 2009 and 2010, is complicit in this deadly plan to eliminate even more innocent unborn children in Africa,” said Fr. Boquet. “This attack would be impossible without U.S. government funding, and it must be stopped immediately.” As CNSNews.com reported this week, in a strategic plan for Africa IPPF announced plans for an 82 percent increase in so-called “safe abortion” services. After he was elected, President Obama reinstated tax payer funding to UNFPA, reversing the policy of the Bush Administration, which had defunded the organization in 2001 due to its proven complicity in China's coercive one-child policy. IPPF’s 2010 financial statement shows grants from UNFPA in 2009 and 2010 totaling over $3 million. “We know there is no such thing as a ‘safe abortion.’ Abortion kills a child, and harms the mother,” Fr. Boquet said. “President Obama owes taxpayers an explanation as to why, even with our nation’s serious financial problems, we are still paying tens of millions of dollars to an organization whose sole aim is to stop people in the developing world from having children.” “IPPF has laid its cards on the table – they want to stop Africans from having children, and U.S. taxpayers are supposed to support this assault? Even more than here in the U.S., the children of Africa are the social support system for parents in countries without generous social services,” said Fr. Boquet. “We have no right to be meddling in other nations like this, especially when it involves promoting the increased destruction of unborn human life!"
