FRONT ROYAL, VA—Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president, Human Life International denounces the hypocrisy of Uruguay’s radical feminist leaders and politicians who recently accused six U.S. congressmen of meddling in foreign affairs. “The feminists of Uruguay just got a big dose of their own medicine,” said Fr. Euteneuer, in response to the May 4, 2004, 17-13 vote that blocked efforts to decriminalize abortion in Uruguay. “The feminists cheered when CLADEM, Latin America’s foremost feminist organization, sent a declaration signed by 26 U.S. and international feminist groups in an attempt to coerce Uruguayan lawmakers into legalizing abortion. They cheered when Hillary Clinton announced a $170 million intrusion of American cash for abortion promotion in Latin America at the 1998 Montevideo conference. But now that Uruguay has decided not to legalize the murder of the unborn, the feminists are crying foul play. What hypocrisy!” A fax sent by six U.S. congressmen to several Uruguayan senators asking them not to legalize abortion has unleashed the wrath of leftist Senator Monica Xavier, who is asking her government to take “diplomatic action” against the congressmen. Yet U.S.-based pro-abortion organizations, like Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), IPAS, and “Catholics” for a Free Choice (CFFC), also sent letters asking Uruguayan senators to legalize abortion. CFFC received $18,285,048 through the year 2000 for the promotion of “reproductive rights/access to abortion” in Latin America. PPFA has likewise received tens of millions of dollars to decriminalize abortion in Catholic countries. Add the moral, intellectual and financial support of USAID and U.N. agencies for the promotion of so-called “emergency contraception,” and you have a case of massive Western interference in the sovereignty of Latin American nations. “Our experience with abortion extremists,” said Fr. Euteneuer, “has taught us there is always a double standard: pro-lifers have to shut up and sit down while pro-aborts demand an unfettered right to free speech. I applaud the courageous U.S. congressmen for their timely statements and the Uruguayan senators who voted to save the lives of potentially millions of unborn Uruguayan women from abortion.” Founded in 1981, Human Life International is the world’s largest pro-life, pro-faith, pro-family educational apostolate, with a network of branches and affiliates around the world.
