Father West: Obamacare Needs to be Repealed

Father Peter West, vice president for missions at Human Life International, made the following comments on the Supreme Court steps Thursday following the Court’s decision on Obamacare. [Transcript follows video.]

I’m Father Peter West. I work at Human Life International. We are pro-life missionaries to the world. And we defend life, faith and family throughout the world. We are opposed to abortion, contraception and sterilization as a Catholic pro-life organization. We are also opposed to euthanasia. We find this [Supreme Court] decision [today on Obamacare] abhorrent.

Though many think that contraception actually leads to less abortions, in practice, a contraceptive mentality that fails to see a child as a gift actually leads to more abortions. Besides being a violation on the right to life, Obamacare is a direct assault on personal and religious liberty, and the rights of conscience which should be protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which guarantees free exercise of religion.

As an international organization, we have seen how other governments throughout the world violate these rights, but I never thought it would happen right here in the United States of America.

It was not just the individual mandate that was a problem, it’s the entire bill that’s a problem, and it needs to be repealed. It forces religious employers, such as Human Life International, to pay for abortion inducing drugs, sterilization, contraception—regardless of our moral and religious objections. It allowed a group of bureaucrats to make and life and death decisions for patients based in large part on a cost-benefit analysis.

The fight for life is a legal battle, but it is also very much a cultural battle. The battle for hearts and minds, the battle for the future begins here and now with the young people who are here, with your peers and your communities. We must continue to reject any attempt to allow the most vulnerable members of our society to be killed at either end of the spectrum of life.

We have an obligation to care for those who do not have health care, but Obamacare is not the answer, and it needs to be repealed.
