FRONT ROYAL, Virginia – Human Life International Rome Office Executive Director Monsignor Ignacio Barreiro-Carámbula was honored for his lifetime of distinguished service defending and promoting a Culture of Life by organizers of the March for Life in Italy on Saturday, May 11 in Rome.
Monsignor Barreiro received the “Award for Life” during a conference at the University of Regina Apostolorum preceding the 2013 March for Life.
“I am very grateful to the Lord for this recognition and for the work of our office in the defense of life and family,” Monsignor Barreiro said.
The March for Life is only in its third year in Italy, and Monsignor Barreiro is the third recipient of the Award for Life.
The award was first given in 2011 on the first year that the March took place in Desenzano del Garda. It was given to Dr. Óscar Elías Biscet González, a Cuban medical professional, human rights advocate, and outspoken opponent of abortion and euthanasia.
At the 2012 March for Life in Italy, which took place in Rome, the award was grated to Dr. Gianna Emanuela Molla, daughter of Saint Gianna Beretta Molla.
“On behalf of the entire HLI family, I congratulate Monsignor Barreiro on receiving this award and thank him for his decades of service defending the most vulnerable in society,” said HLI President Father Shenan J. Boquet. “May God continue to bless Monsignor and his work.”
Italy’s March for Life drew a reported 40,000 people together this year to affirm the sanctity of the right to life from conception until natural death – about 25,000 more participants than last year’s March. Those marching also received an unexpected surprise from the Holy Father Pope Francis who left the Apostolic Palace to greet the marchers from his popemobile.
