HLI Statement on Doctors Urging Contraception for Girls

Updated October 7, 2014 – CONTACT: Krista Thomas at 540-622-5270 – –

FRONT ROYAL, Virginia — Following is a statement from Father Shenan J. Boquet, president of Human Life International, in reference to yesterday’s announcement that the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that children begin to use long-acting reversible contraceptives.

“With today’s announcement that the American Academy of Pediatrics has endorsed for children the use of dangerous hormonal drugs that encourage risky sexual behavior, we see the latest evidence that radical sexual ideology has infected the formerly esteemed medical establishment in this nation. This academy just told the young daughters of the United States that it safe to engage in risky sexual behavior and that they should take drugs that in no way improve their health, but indeed put them at risk for myriad, serious side effects.

“How else can one explain such a reckless statement from the AAP, which contains only a cursory acknowledgment of the safest and most ethical behavior for adolescents, which is abstinence? Not one of the doctors in this academy can look you in the eye and tell you that a young girl who engages in risky sexual activity while using these hormonal drugs is likely to have better health outcomes than a girl who abstains from sexual activity and avoids these drugs. Not one of them. Yet they are recommending that girls and their parents take the more dangerous and destructive road; and this from ‘health authorities’ with an obligation to protect the health and well-being of children.

“Not only this, but the widely reprinted article from the ‘Health Day’ website uses only Planned Parenthood sources without mentioning the financial stake that Planned Parenthood has in this matter, which is to get policymakers to strengthen the contraceptive mandate and force these dangerous long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods to be provided free-of-charge. In the article, Planned Parenthood is treated as a disinterested authority, and two doctors with ties to Planned Parenthood (one who is a medical director for Planned Parenthood in Missouri but not identified as such, the other is a representative of the Guttmacher Institute, which was founded by Planned Parenthood and continues to support its agenda with slanted research) are also presented as objective voices of authority. At the same time, the large minority of pediatricians who have serious concerns about the safety of these methods – nearly 10,000 doctors – are brushed off with a ridiculous sleight of hand on the part of the reporter.

“This is a Planned Parenthood press release. It is only about money – specifically, it is a formerly reputable medical academy shilling for the profiteers of the contraceptive industry – for Planned Parenthood and for the pharmaceutical companies who profit when girls give themselves over for sex before they’re ready and married.

“Promotion of this reckless behavior for children not simply imprudent, it is evil. Parents need to wake up, and now. This ideology is corrupting our schools and every institution that used to stand for the protection of children. Parents must in the clearest terms demand that this propaganda not drive public policy at the local or national level, lest your girls be treated like animals who cannot be trusted to make good decisions about their sexuality and their health. Do what you must to protect your daughters’ innocence and purity, and don’t be browbeaten by the profiteers of the destruction of young women’s health.

“And, finally, I implore my brother priests and our faithful shepherds to preach about the evils of contraception, especially when these dangerous drugs are presented by medical authorities as essential to the health of young women. Nothing could be further from the truth, whether we’re talking about their physical health, or their spiritual health. As pastors, we have an obligation to tell the truth with love.”

Shame on the American Academy of Pediatrics. I once had a pediatrician talk to my 14 year old son about condoms; even though, we were not there for that purpose. I felt like he undermined our family’s values. He did not even check with me first or speak of abstinence until marriage as the healthiest and most preferred method.

Twenty five years ago, when I was seeking out a pediatrician fro my then-young children, I made a point of making an appointment with a fellow parishioner, who had a private practice as a GP. I used that appointment to interview him regarding the kind of care he would provide my children as they entered adolescence and beyond. I was very specific in my questions and in my statements as to my requirements that my children’s health care recognize that they are spiritual as well as corporeal beings, and i was not willing to have their spiritual health damaged in the name of health care. This doctor understood and agreed with what I wanted, and he remained our family doctor for many years. However, a few years ago he left private practice and joined a larger company, bringing his patients with him. I found that when I called to make an appointment with him for my youngest child I would not always be getting him. I might get a nurse practitioner or some other doctor than the one I had trusted. On one of these visits, the other doctor asked me if my daughter had received he Guardacil shot (to protect against STD’s). I told her that I thought it to be unnecessary to give my daughter an antibiotic that carried enough of its own dangers to protect her from diseases to which she would not be exposed. The doctor looked at me as if I were a fool (this in front of my 13 year old daughter), and said, in a tone of disgust and incredulity, “you DO understand that she WILL be having sex, don’t you?” I responded, “Of course, when she is married.” got up, and walked out of the office. I still had to pay for the visit. I did some research and found a pediatrician registered with the Catholic Medical Association across the state from us. He was willing to take her as a patient, and he is still her doctor. As for my own health care, I remained with my doctor, and just made sure that I only saw him when I have visits. However, he has resigned as a doctor, and I have no medical practitioner of my own now at age 67.

What I’m not hearing or seeing here, is the proper emphasis on the First Commandment, as well as the Sixth, as unchaste behavior is gravely immoral, a major offense against God, a type of idolatry (mortal sin if done with full knowledge and consent, as indicated in the Bible and Catechism of the Catholic Church and lives and writings of the saints), and Fifth Commandment, as promoting unchaste behavior is scandal, and thus endangers souls, if people fail to repent and obtain absolution. Thanks for your consideration.
