Statement from Father Peter West, vice president for missions of Human Life International:
Under the guise of promoting “equal rights for women,” the European Union (EU) voted to adopt the “Tarabella Report,” which maintains:
“…that women must have control over their sexual and reproductive health and rights, not least by having ready access to contraception and abortion; supports, accordingly, measures and actions to improve women’s access to sexual and reproductive health services and inform them more fully about their rights and the services available;”
Reproductive health is a euphemism for abortion, but no semantic subterfuge can ever hide the ugly, violent nature of this assault on the most vulnerable and innocent of our brothers and sisters. Abortion can never be a human right, because it is the violation of the most fundamental human right –the right to life without which all other rights are meaningless. We can do better for women than offering them the false solution of abortion and promote methods of family planning which respect women’s human dignity.
The resolution is significant and dangerous, since by it the EU carves a path for a more progressive agenda of pushing “sexual and reproductive health and rights” (SRHR), blurring the distinction between the sexes, deconstructing the family, and pressuring EU Member States to alter their policies on these matters.
Human Life International condemns this resolution and calls on all people of good will to do the same.
