Statement from HLI President Father Shenan J. Boquet, on the passing of pro-life hero, Dr. Jean Garton:
The entire HLI family mourns the death of the great pro-lifer, Doctor Jean Garton, who passed away on December 23. The first president of Lutherans for Life and author of the very important book Who Broke the Baby, Dr. Garton was loved and admired by many, and was undoubtedly responsible for saving countless lives and growing the pro-life movement with her courageous witness. HLI’s late founder, Father Paul Marx, was a friend of and collaborator with Dr. Garton. We pray that she be received into the loving arms of Our Lord, Whose birth we remember during this Holy Season of Christmas. We pray for the repose of her soul, and pray for consolation and peace for all who mourn her passing.
It seems appropriate to recall here the words of the late, great pro-life Congressman Henry Hyde, whose reflections on the passing of pro-life champions certainly apply to Dr. Garton.
When the time comes as it surely will, when we face that awesome moment, the final judgment, I’ve often thought, as Fulton Sheen wrote, that it is a terrible moment of loneliness. You have no advocates, you are there alone standing before God and a terror will rip through your soul like nothing you can imagine. But I really think that those in the pro-life movement will not be alone. I think there will be a chorus of voices that have never been heard in this world but are heard beautifully and clearly in the next world and they will plead for everyone who has been in this movement. They will say to God, “Spare him because he loved us,” and God will look at you and say not, “Did you succeed?” but “Did you try?”
