Following is a statement from HLI president Father Shenan J. Boquet on the nomination of Neil Gorsuch for justice of the Supreme Court:
With the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court, it appears that the Trump administration is fulfilling another promise — this one to appoint a justice who still holds that the US Constitution is to be interpreted as it was originally understood. Judge Gorsuch’s reputation is stellar, and he appears willing to uphold the religious freedom guaranteed by the First Amendment and to see the lives of the most vulnerable as being worth defending in law. Would that these were less controversial positions.
While it appears that Judge Gorsuch’s method of legal reasoning bodes well for those who defend life and family, we take nothing for granted given the failure of some appointed justices of the Court to give due deference to the original understanding of the Constitution. We continue to pray with all Christians that the next justice will protect the most essential rights of life and liberty, and will show the humility and respect due to the one institution that predates all governments and courts, natural marriage.
