Rest in Peace, Monsignor Barreiro

Monsignor BarreiroStatement from HLI president Father Shenan J. Boquet on the passing of Monsignor Ignacio Barreiro-Carambula, former interim president of HLI and longtime director of HLI’s Rome office.

Monsignor Ignacio Barreiro’s courageous five year battle with cancer ended this morning at 2:00 am, when he surrendered his life and spirit to the Lord. The entire HLI community mourns with his family, as Monsignor was a part of HLI’s family for more than twenty years. During this length of service, Monsignor touched and even saved countless lives with his many articles in defense of the most vulnerable, and his advocacy for them in often tenuous circumstances.
Today begins the Holy Triduum, and on this day, Holy Thursday, Our Lord instituted the Sacred Priesthood and Most Holy Eucharist. Monsignor loved his vocation to the priesthood and centered his life around the Holy Mass. Today was very special for him. I think it only fitting that on this day Monsignor would surrender his life and spirit to the Lord Jesus, the High Priest, who so generously allowed him to share in His priesthood. May Our Lord welcome his faithful priest and servant home: “Well done, good and faithful servant… Come, share your master’s joy.”
Eternal rest grant unto Monsignor O, Lord. And, let Your perpetual light shine upon him.
We will publish details on his funeral when they are available.

  1. So sad to read of the death of Monsignor Barreiro. He was indeed a Pro-Life Warrior and I was privileged to meet him through HLI gatherings. Lord rest his soul in peace in Heaven…for surely his suffering has ensured this.

  2. We were very privileged to have known Msgr. Barriero. He did two days of recollection for our Latin Mass group here in Buffalo, New York. We also spent time with him in Rome. Truly a holy and humble priest. May he and the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace, Amen.

  3. Msgr. Barriero is already greatly missed by our family. He was very gracious to us as we brought several pilgrimage groups to Rome over the past 15 years. Peggy and I are so glad we were able to visit him last November at St. Mary’s in Norwalk Connecticut. He is very much missed and in our family’s prayers. God Bless.

  4. Msgr’s passing is truly a Great Loss to the HLI family & the Church Universal. I had the priviledge of meeting Msgr. Barriero as a seminarian, & his unmistakeable love for the Lord, avid Defense of all Life especially the unborn, & his tireless promotion of the Culture of Life made a lasting & profound impact on my Vocation to the Priesthood. May he rest in Eternal Peace! My thoughts & prayers are with his family & Loved ones at this time of bereavement.
