Front Royal, VA – Human Life International’s global pro-life family was saddened to learn of Alfie Evans’ death earlier today. We extend to Kate, Tom and their family our condolences and assurance of continued prayer.

This is a tragic ending to a sad story that began shortly after Alfie was born in May 2016. This little boy and the heroic efforts of his parents have captured the attention of the world and brought to the forefront the debate over care for the infirmed, the rights of parents and the sanctity of human life. Alfie’s parents are to be commended for their courageous defense of their son and his inalienable dignity.

It is HLI’s hope that the scandalous behavior exercised by Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and the British State will not be so easily excused or forgotten. Their actions in this matter are part of an on-going global debate over medical directives, State laws and judicial interventions. The issues of hydration and nutrition, ordinary and extraordinary care for the ill, aged and dying also need to be considered in this debate, as well as the rights of parents as the primary educations and sole custodians of their children, freedom of conscience and the sanctity of every human life.

May the life of this precious little boy who touched the minds and hearts of the world inspire parents and those in pro-life and family movements to remain vigilant and courageous in their efforts to love, defend, respect and serve every life.

Alfie no longer needs our prayers. Baptized and under ‘the age of reason”, according to Catholic teaching, he has gone straight to heaven. However, let us continue to pray for his family, and everyone else involved.
