Front Royal, VA – Father Shenan J. Boquet, President of Human Life International, today expressed grave disappointment and concern over the tragic situation affecting the precious life of Alfie Evans by Alder Hey Hospital and the British State.

“This innocent and defenseless little boy was removed, by State order, from his ventilator on April 23 around 9:00 PM; however, Alfie has defied everyone’s expectations by breathing on his own – fighting to live.

Alfie’s parents, Tom and Kate, have continued to advocate for their son. All they have wanted from the beginning of Alfie’s illness and throughout this period is what is best for him. They are to be commended for their heroic efforts, which have sadly been ignored and rejected by the hospital, Britain’s judicial system and the State.

The issue at hand is parental rights. This is a case of hospitals and judges usurping the natural rights of loving parents and effectively holding a child hostage in a hospital because they believe it is futile to continue with life support. The State’s unconscionable actions in this case is due in part to the Children’s Act of 1989, which ultimately strips parents of their legal rights as primary custodians and caregivers, instead, entrusting these rights to the State. This legislation should make every parent, not only in Great Britain, but around the world seriously concerned and moved to immediate action; after all, the assault on parental rights and freedom of conscience is growing in every corner of the world. What we currently see with Alfie and saw with Charlie Gard are not the only cases.

HLI expresses gratitude to Pope Francis, the Italian government and Bambino Gesu Hospital for their compassionate intervention, generosity and support of Alfie and his parents. It is unfortunate that these interventions were not welcomed by Alder Hey Hospital or the British State.

HLI’s global family remains united in prayer for Alfie, Tom, Kate and their family.”

  1. […] It is HLI’s hope that the scandalous behavior exercised by Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and the British State will not be so easily excused or forgotten. Their behavior in this matter remains at the heart of an on-going global debate over medical directives, State laws and judicial interventions. The issues of hydration and nutrition, ordinary and extraordinary care for the ill, aged and dying also need to be considered in this debate, as well as the rights of parents as the sole legitimate custodians of their children, freedom of conscience and the sanctity of every human life.
