HLI Marches for Life…Around the World

From East to West, North to South

Every year Human Life International (HLI) walks aside other pro-lifers in marches for Life around the world, Belgium in Europe to Soroti, Uganda. The worldwide march for life movement is growing. One of the most impressive ones recently was in Argentina, where HLI-Argentina President, Dr. Oscar Botta, participated. These are thought to be an American export, starting with the witness and enormous crowds present over the years at the March for Life in the United States. Even if the secular, liberal press likes to ignore them, over 3.5 million marched just in Argentina alone. Just as we are united in Christ, we are united in this pro-life, global community.

We participate in many, five alone in the first six months detailed in HLI’s 2017 Impact Report. Well, perhaps just one as an example! HLI has long assisted Czechs in their fight to protect the dignity of human life. This year HLI joined their march in March, where police gauged the Prague crowd to be at 10,000; what a celebration for Life! This year hit more new highs, thanks partly to the Czech Bishops’ Conference. No less than six bishops participated at the March itself, and Cardinal Dominik Jaroslav DUKA OP, officially opened the event with Mass at the Cathedral.

Recall: a priest is the Vicar of Christ on earth. How much, then, does it mean, to have our clergy leading the Way? We acknowledge that there is a supernatural aspect to all that we do. In this spirit, one of the marchers underlined the urgent need for prayer and sacrifice: “Witnessing is powerful, but one must not forget the cry of John Paul II in his encyclical, Evangelium Vitae:

Youth are a characteristic of the March for Life in Washington, D.C. and an auspicious sign for our future (2018).

Filled with this certainty, and moved by profound concern for the destiny of every man and woman, I repeat what I said to those families who carry out their challenging mission amid so many difficulties: 135 a great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer. Jesus himself has shown us by his own example that prayer and fasting are the first and most effective weapons against the forces of evil (cf. Mt 4:1-11). As he taught his disciples, some demons cannot be driven out except in this way (cf. Mk 9:29). Let us therefore discover anew the humility and the courage to pray and fast so that power from on high will break down the walls of lies and deceit: the walls which conceal from the sight of so many of our brothers and sisters the evil of practices and laws which are hostile to life. May this same power turn their hearts to resolutions and goals inspired by the civilization of life and love (100).

Zdenka Rybovam, head of the organizing group “Hnuti Pro zivort CR,” told HLI Regional Director of Europe, Joannes Bucher: “Each year our pro-life family grows. We continue to celebrate Life with all who wish to join us. This year the Cardinal, by opening the March by celebrating Holy Mass, inspired us in our love for Life. Our message for our pro-life family is to open your hearts even wider, bring the cause of Life into your parishes and beyond. Europe needs children!“ All are all wanted by God, which trumps anyone who claims a baby could be “unwanted.” Nigerian Bishop Emmanuel Badejo of Oyo, Nigeria stated in the Knights of Columbus publication referenced above: “In Africa we have a saying: There is always room for one more child!” See? We are a global community that will unceasingly defend Life.
