Time for Civil Disobedience?
“They” said legalizing abortion would be limited. Lie #1: abortion will be permitted up to 6 months. Devout health care workers have been begging for their freedom of conscience rights to be observed, allowing them to be excused from murdering babies in the womb. Lie #2: the government promised there would be exclusions for health care workers. There are none. Despite calls of the Catholic Church to resist government laws, December 7th will be here in under two weeks. Will doctors and other medical personnel refuse to participate? Will Catholic hospitals be forced to remove “Catholic” from the name over their doors? HLI President Fr. Shenan J. Boquet:
The new legislation will not only inaugurate the death of vulnerable unborn children, it will force taxpayers to pay for the crime, mandate that Catholic hospitals provide them, and strictly limit conscience protections for medical professionals. Either doctors and nurses provide abortion service, i.e. murder of unborn babies, or lose their jobs. This is totalitarianism!
When pro-abortion measures were looming in 2009 under U.S. elect President Obama, Catholic bishops were prepared to close 624 Catholic hospitals rather than comply with the proposed “Freedom of Choice ACT” if it had become law. In other words, if forced to do abortions, good luck said the bishops, find your own hospitals; we will not be a party to this evil and will close up shop. This is not a bluff; the country is largely dependent on Catholic health care. And as the saying goes, sometimes “the buck stops here.” In fact, the Catholic Church was instrumental in setting up the first hospitals in the Middle Ages. And it was to care for the poor, the sick…not to make blood money.
A Medical Disaster Waiting to Happen
The Irish abortion law requires it to be GP (general practitioner or family doctor) led. These physicians have no specialty in extensive obstetrics/gynecological training. They don’t even have the right equipment to treat and diagnose. As Dr. McGuire was paraphrased in the journal.ie:
Most local GPs or healthcare centres could not afford equipment like ultrasound machines. Ultrasound equipment [is] essential to effectively gauge gestational age. Giving a woman an abortion pill without that certainty could be highly dangerous to the woman.
If one cannot determine the gestational age of the fetus, there is no way to know its age, size, how many weeks along, or the ramifications to the mother. There are a plethora of medical scenarios that can arise and these need to be handled by a specialist. If the U.S. is a guide, then Irish specialists don’t want anything to do with the stigma associated with this gruesome procedure, either. Abortion-inducing drugs can only be administered the first 9-10 weeks, so surgery would be required after that point and yes, it can be very harmful to a woman, whose body is not intended to deliver her child at that stage of development.
Think of it another way. If you needed a colonoscopy, one would visit the gastrointestinal specialist. Any specialist spends an additional two years of medical study beyond four years of medical study just dealing with that specialty. Do you want a neurologist (trained in the brain) to be checking your colon? Dr. McGuire: “So that kind of specialised activity in medicine has to be concentrated and it’s only going to be concentrated where it’s being done on a daily basis.” (Witness the case of infamous Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell. He was not trained as an obstetrician/gynecologist, either. Many babies he delivered instead and then snipped their spinal cord to kill them.)
As HLI has pointed out in numerous publications and training, the trend towards abortion starts with contraception. A couple not open to life can panic when they find they are pregnant because of the failure rate of birth control. Not wanting to be pregnant, they next turn not to life but to abortion. Patrick McCrystal, head of HLI Ireland:
This totalitarian abortion process is the fruit of Ireland’s saturation by contraception for 40 years, a profound turning away from God and his Church by the Irish people and an alliance of global and national forces that have acted in what appears to be an almost diabolical hatred of Ireland’s Catholicism and culture. However, we believe God will ultimately triumph and indeed may intervene in our present day.
Abortion is Never “Moderate”
It’s the same, lame, old argument. Abortion proponents trying to legalize fetal homicide allege the law will only be “moderate” to protect “women’s health.” HLI President Fr. Shenan J. Boquet:
We are not surprised by the radical and swift action of Ireland’s government, though it originally stated it promote a “moderate” law. For decades, Ireland was a strong, pro-life country that defended human life from the moment of conception to natural death. Its pro-life laws protected women from the violence of abortion and had one of the lowest maternal mortality rates in the world. Thursday’s vote legalizes abortion up to six months of pregnancy, which inevitably will be extended to nine months; after all, if one can kill a child at six months, why not up to birth?
Anyone who doubts that legalization of a forbidden practice – abortion to marijuana – and argues that legalization leads to less of that problem is mistaken. One need only to look to statistics as to abortions in the millions since Roe vs. Wade or even the more recent numbers for marijuana use in the U.S. state of Colorado.
Time for Prayer is Now
What is evil but the exaltation of self-will against the loving will of God, the desire to be a god unto oneself, to accuse His wisdom as foolishness and His love as want of tenderness?
—The Life of Christ, Fulton Sheen
Why not consider a 9-day novena for God’s will to prevail in Ireland? Again, HLI President Fr. Shenan Boquet:
The government’s actions fall on the heels of May’s referendum of the 8th Amendment where 66% voted to repeal the constitutional amendment (84% of those 18-24 years old voted yes) – almost the exact same proportion that voted just over three decades ago to pass Amendment 8 in the first place. So much has changed, and so fast! But HLI calls upon all people of good will in Ireland to fight to repeal this violent assault upon the most vulnerable of its nation. The right to life is the most important right of all. This is not the time to be despondent but time to organize and unite is a single effort demanding justice for the unborn and those who oppose the violence of abortion.
We are called to Hope by the Church. And Hope springs eternal, for with God all things are possible.
