Margaret Sanger and Eugenics

Planned Parenthood Under the Surfa

You’ve probably heard of Margaret Sanger, the founder of what eventually became Planned Parenthood.

But did you know that her legacy is steeped in the troubling ideology of eugenics?

At Human Life International, we’ve created a 37-page e-book, Planned Parenthood Under the Surface, that uncovers the truth about Margaret Sanger’s disturbing beliefs and how they continue to influence Planned Parenthood’s practices today.

Here are just a few of the facts you’ll uncover:

  • In 1921, Margaret Sanger founded The American Birth Control League, which she described as an organization to: “promote eugenic birth selection throughout the United States so that there may be more well-born and fewer ill-born children — a stronger, healthier, and more intelligent race.” (See footnote 13 in the e-book)

  • In 1939, Sanger’s American Birth Control League launched the Negro Project, explicitly targeting African American communities in the South. Sanger infamously wrote: “We don’t want word to go out that we want to exterminate the negro population.”* (See footnote 17 in the e-book)

  • As recently as 2020, Planned Parenthood’s own annual report revealed that its “priority audience” remains Black and Hispanic women. (See footnote 75 in the e-book)

These facts are just the beginning.

Margaret Sanger’s beliefs in eugenics have left a lasting mark, and many of her ideas continue to shape Planned Parenthood’s approach today.

For over 50 years, Human Life International has been exposing the truth about Planned Parenthood’s troubling history and ongoing practices. We’ve gathered the most critical information into a powerful, easy-to-read e-book.
