In this 2001 presentation, Msgr. Ignacio Barreiro-Carambula, executive director of HLI’s Rome office, explains that the Church has always taught that contraception is a sin. Some claims arose starting in the early 1960s that this teaching was in question, but this has never been the case. The climate of the times within the Church and in secular society, which has been dominated by humanist philosophy, influenced this ambiguous understanding. Msgr. Barreiro discusses the history of contraception and how society began to accept this previously objectionable practice. He also analyzes the controversy that surrounded the introduction of Humanae Vitae and the erroneous arguments used by its dissenters.
