Theology of the Body Explained: God’s Original Plan for Man and Woman (Part 1)
In this episode, Adolfo Castañeda, Human Life International’s Director of Hispanic Education, joins us to explore the foundations of Pope St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body.
Developed through 129 papal audiences, Theology of the Body offers one of the most profound Catholic explanations of human identity, marriage, sexuality, and God’s plan for men and women. Rather than presenting a new doctrine, John Paul II deepened the Church’s perennial teaching by examining Scripture, especially Genesis, through the lens of God’s original design for humanity.
Adolfo explains how Theology of the Body emerged as a response to both sexual permissiveness and misunderstandings about human sexuality, offering instead a beautiful vision of authentic love rooted in self-gift, human dignity, and holiness.

Key Takeaways
Theology of the Body is more than a teaching on marriage.
John Paul II intended it to be a path toward holiness that helps every Christian better understand God’s plan for human life and love.
The body reveals the person.
The human body is not separate from the spiritual life but an essential part of how we encounter God and others.
Marriage reflects divine love.
Christian marriage serves as a living sign of Christ’s sacrificial love for His Church.
Original sin distorted—but did not destroy—God’s design.
Human beings continue to long for authentic love, communion, and self-gift because God’s original plan remains written into human nature.
Authentic love requires self-gift.
At the heart of Theology of the Body is the idea that love is found not in self-seeking but in giving oneself to God and others.
